In our inquiry of our Body and Senses - a statement was made by the children

“If we can’t smell then we can’t breathe!”

Hmm, how might we test and prove or disprove this idea.

I brought in some lemons squished in a bag and let the children smell them.  Then they were asked if they could breathe through their mouth.  “Yes!”  “Can you smell when breathing through your mouth?” 

“Yes!”  So even breathing through their mouth they thought that they still had to be able to smell to breathe.

The children were given a straw each and as I blocked their nose, they breathed in through their mouth with the straw sealed in the bag of lemons.  “Can you smell the lemons when you breathe in?”  “No!”  “Can you breathe?”  “Yes!”  So the statement of “If you can’t smell you can’t breathe was disproved".

We have also been working on our Gross Motor skills.  The children have been working in pairs and taking it in turns to choose an activity for all the class to do as we go to play at recess and lunch.  They have taken it quite seriously and have worked together, (with Mrs Carson) to provide an opportunity to practise these skills.  It could be an activity such as hopping, skipping, throwing and catching balls, or walking on the balance beam or stilts as a few examples of what the children have already chosen.

We are beginning to explore families, and communities.
