Grade 2/3 have been investigating the properties of water and how we use it.

As a scientific inquiry into how water behaves, we constructed a walking rainbow using seven cups, water, food colouring, a spoon and paper towel. We poured a small amount of water into every second cup and added different food colouring to the water.

We stirred it well and then folded our paper towels so that every cup had two paper towel ends in them. The water very quickly began to travel up the paper towels using a capillary action.

The empty cups had water trickling down the paper towels and into them. Over the next two days the colours blended. We will display our rainbow somewhere around the office area for everyone to see.
