Some ‘athletic numeracy’ to solve back at Glen Huon
The teachers thought they would have a walking race at school.
Mrs Tucker and Miss van der Schans were keen to compete.
Miss van der Schans, has a walking rate of 2.5 metres per second. Mrs Tucker has a walking rate of 1 metre per second.
Mrs Tucker has challenged Miss van der Schans in the walking race. Since she has a faster walking rate, Miss van der Schans gives Mrs Tucker a 45 metre head start.
Miss van der Schans wants Mrs Tucker to win the race, but she does not want to make it obvious she let her colleague teacher win.
How long might the race be so that Miss Tucker will win but in a close race?
Think about how you might convince me.
Could you sketch a drawing, make a table, create a graph or record on a number-line?
I look forward to your explorations.
