Grade One/Two Report
Grade One/Two spent much of Friday out in the bush. They worked together in small groups to make cubby houses together. They were put into groups and shown the basics of using two ‘y sticks’ and a ‘backbone’ to make their cubby. They were then given the task of working together to create their cubby house and make it so that it would be waterproof (ish).
It was just wonderful to watch the children working determinedly together to create their cubby. They were negotiating with one another, testing theories, using trial and error, showing patience, persistence and teamwork. The children had to think creatively, solve problems and be resilient. These are all essential skills for life.
One group recreated their cubby house three times until they were happy that it was stable enough. Another group’s cubby fell over after an hour of working on it. It was so impressive to see the children take that in their stride and the other groups rally around to help them rebuild, without being asked.
After recess we ventured back to the bush. We lit a fire together and some groups continued improving their cubbies, while others had a good look at the ‘Flips’ – The Poo Flip, Euca Flip, Tree Flip and the Fungi Flip. They headed off in small groups to investigate the bush and to see what kinds of plants and animals live within it.
When it was time to head back to class, we discussed the importance of making sure the fire was out properly and how we might go about that.
I was so impressed by the way the children took these challenges very seriously and in the way that they worked together and were inclusive of everyone.
