BE AWARE! Bushfire-ready Glen Huon, Judbury and Lonnavale.
On Saturday 5 October from 2pm at the Judbury Community Centre residents of the Judbury, Glen Huon and Lonnavale areas are invited to come along to a free bushfire-ready session.
This bushfire-ready event will include information on steps for a safer summer and discussions about recent bushfire experiences. From this session people’s tips and ideas will influence the design of a bushfire-ready mural that is to be installed at the Judbury Community Centre. The bushfire-ready mural project is a unique approach to engaging residents in bushfire preparedness by inviting them to discuss their risks. It will enable residents of the Upper Huon to come together to discuss local bushfire problems and hazards, find solutions to these issues and then collaboratively come up with a bushfire-ready themed mural design. The mural will be a community message of what we all can do to be safer from bushfires.
Lesley King, Community Development Officer with Tasmania Fire Service and recent Community Liaison Officer for the Riveaux Road fires, has over 20 years’ experience in community arts and will facilitate the community bushfire-ready information, mural design and painting workshops. “I think coming together to share bushfire stories and tips, and contributing ‘get ready’ ideas will mean that the Judbury, Glen Huon and Lonnavale community have a locally relevant and owned bushfire-ready themed mural. The Glen Huon Primary School’s Year 5/6 class have already started working with me on mural design ideas. These students have a really good understanding of local bushfire hazards and how to be safer in bushfires. They have come up with some great design ideas and they all agreed on three crucial steps that they thought were important for people to know about being bushfire-ready. These were ‘Be Prepared, Be Aware and Respond Quickly’. The student’s ideas will be a great contribution to the mural.”
Also coming along to this session will be representatives from the Upper Huon Volunteer Fire Brigade, Red Cross, Huon Valley Community Bendigo Bank, IAG Insurance, Huon Valley health support worker and the Huon Valley Council to provide related emergency planning, insurance information and support.
This is a free community workshop with all materials and refreshments provided. To register your interest to be part of the bushfire-ready session and mural project contact Lesley King on 6166 5606 or email lesley.king@fire.tas.gov.au
