Grade 5/6 Report
Things have been a bit quiet in the 5/6 room of late. As we make the transition to online learning there are lots of new discoveries to be made by all of us.
While we still had a full class with us, we did some research on germs and particularly the effect that good hygiene has as a defence against the spread of germs. We conducted a little experiment after recess on Friday 13th March and now, 18 days later, we have some startling results.
Our experiment involved two delicious apples. We sliced one in half and put it straight into an air tight zip lock bag. We also taped up the sides to be certain it was fully sealed. We cut the second apple in half and passed it around to everyone in the room. Three people coughed onto the surface of the apple and then it was also placed into an air tight zip lock bag. At first they both went brown and neither of them looked very appetising. We thought our experiment might not work but after a week big differences began to show.
This is how they look today. Our first apple is still brown but the second has started growing all sorts of fuzz! Perhaps there are some students that would like to write and tell me what that fuzz is all about. I’m wondering lots of things and would love to hear what you think.
