Grade 4 / 5 Report

During Term 3 across the school we will be celebrating National Science Week. (August 15th – 23rd). The theme for this year’s celebration is  – “Deep Blue: Innovations for the Future of our Oceans.”

In our class we will be focussing on developing our understandings of the many features of this amazing environment and how important it is to our existence on Earth.

We will investigate how we can help to sustain this environment for generations to come.

To start this unit of work we brainstormed this question – What do we currently know about oceans? Then we thought about what we wanted to know about oceans. So we recorded our questions.

Here are some examples of questions asked -

What is an ocean? How deep are the world’s oceans? What is the deepest ocean? What is the largest ocean? Are there different layers of the ocean? How do humans use the ocean? What impact have humans had on oceans? Who discovered the world’s oceans? What creatures are found in the world’s oceans? What disasters have occurred in the oceans? What’s the difference between an ocean and a sea? Are all oceans the same temperature? Are there different layers of the ocean? What are some of the special features of an ocean?

These questions will drive our inquiries of this precious environment.

Below are some examples of our diagrams we created depicting the different layers of the ocean.
