Maths tools right under our noses…

Dominos provide so many rich learning opportunities.

They’re motivational, challenging and fun.

How many dominos do you have at home?

To link in with the work taking place in class, here’s a game that allows multiple chances to practice ordering numbers.

You can challenge yourself to make whole numbers, fractions or decimals.

Dom_2.jpg
In this case this one domino could be 56, 65, 5/6, 6/5, 5.6 or 6.5

An ordered train of dominos

Start by turning all the dominos over face down.

Initially each player takes turns to collect and flip over three individual dominos and to decide what numbers they will make with them.

Everyone then places the three numbers they have stated into descending order and arranges them as a train with highest at the left.

Then, in turns, collect another domino, decide on its size and make an adjustment to place it in the correct order on your train. This might be a new lead, a new tail or an in-between carriage

Allow everyone time to think about their placement,

but be ready to talk.

‘Talking Mathematics’ builds capacity, encourages views to be exchanged and your child’s mathematical reasoning to be shared.

Actively encourage their exploration and experimentation.

Ask questions rather than telling what they could do.

Why did you think that?

Is it possible to place your next domino in several places?

What do you notice about your train’s numbers?

Repeat, until all dominoes are assigned number names and ordered.

Look forward to having a game with you here at school.
