Base Ten Number System

Our Base Ten number system uses ten digits to make every number we can think of.

Each digit may be positioned into a different place to indicate a different size.

To help us to visualise the numbers we often use a grid to organise them. When we imagine our numbers in a grid, patterns become evident.

In fact, that is a great way to begin to make sense of our number system … just look for the patterns!

Isabella in Grade 1 was quite keen to colour-in the patterns on her 1 – 100 number chart. We tried to colour-in the same digit with its own unique colour.

Look what happened.

We can use that repeat number pattern to help us to fill in the blanks on the following puzzles. See how you go.

Enjoy, Stephanie van der Schans, AST/Numeracy.
