Fine Motor Skills for Young Children
I had the absolute pleasure of spending an afternoon with Prep last week. We spent our time working on our fine motor skills. Fine motor skills, and developing the muscles in a child’s fingers and hands, is very important for young children. Fine motor movements involve the coordination of small muscles in the hands and fingers. Strong fine motor skills are essential when completing simple daily tasks, such as writing, opening lunch boxes, tying shoe laces and much more. Although these activities may seem easy to most adults, the coordination and muscle control required for young children is a lot harder than it looks!
It is a wonderful idea for children to spend time in the afternoon working with their hands, as hand work channels some of that physical energy at a time of day that can often feel chaotic. Some ideas for hand work at home in the afternoons could be knitting, craft, gardening, cooking or construction.
