Principal's Report 18/05/2021
Cross Country Carnival
What a wonderful Cross Country Carnival we had last week, despite the rain towards the end. A HUGE thank you to Mr West for organising this event and also to our Mt Carmel Grade 10 helpers. It was just wonderful to see students encouraging each other, cheering each other on and helping the younger students.
The Huon Cross Country Carnival will be held on Wednesday 26th May and letters have already been sent home with students who were successful in being selected to represent our school in this.
Congratulations Marni
Congratulations go to Marni, who last week was presented with the Junior BP Award at Girl Guides. The Award contains a series of challenges and activities in each of the fundamental areas of Guiding. She received a great new drink bottle as part of the award. What a wonderful achievement, Marni. You must be very proud of yourself!
Debating Team
At the beginning of the year information came through to schools about the opportunity to participate in an inter-school debating roster. A number of students from the 5/6 class showed an interest and so this term, 4 of our students, Olive, Ella, Heather and Elvy, are participating in the roster, with a second roster then taking place in 3rd Term for another group of students. Whilst only 3 speakers actually participate each week, the 4 girls work together on their arguments so that there is a reserve if someone happens to get sick. The student who is ‘reserve’ is rotated each week and the ‘reserve’ also watches the debate and makes feedback notes for the other team members. The roster runs for 4 debates and topics are only released 2 weeks prior to the debate. This week the topic was, “All Primary School Students should participate in Bike Education every year.” This was quite timely given Ride to School Week a few weeks ago. Our team argued for the Affirmative side at Bellerive Primary School yesterday. This was their first ever experience with debating and whilst they did not win the debate, they certainly did a wonderful job, spoke with great confidence and learnt a lot. We wish them all the very best for this new and exciting experience and for their future debates.
NAPLAN
Congratulations to all our Grade 3 and 5 students who have undertaken NAPLAN testing over the past week we are so proud of you all. We still have a few catch-ups to do for students who were absent, but for the most part we have finished…and what better way to celebrate everyone’s efforts than with post-NAPLAN-pizza. Yum!

Curious Kinders
I had the pleasure of spending some time with the Kindergarten class on Monday. We shared the wonderful book “Press Here” written by Herve Tullet
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kj81KC-Gm64
On one of the pages it has glorious overlapping circles of colour and so we talked about what happens when you mix colours such as red and yellow or blue and red.
We also talked about what we thought would happen if you dipped the edge of paper towel into a plate of water. Then we combined these two things to explore what happens when we put a dot of Texta onto some paper towel and then dip this into a plate of water.
