Japanese Visitor
On Friday, students from 5/6, 2/3 and Prep welcomed Yumi-sensei back a second time this year to look at Shodo, or Japanese calligraphy. Yumi-sensei discussed the history of Shodo and how kanji within the Japanese language has evolved over time. Grade 2/3 & 5/6 students created their artistic writing pieces by using sumi ink, washi paper and Japanese calligraphy brushes, while Preps used paint and brush to do the same. The kanji that we concentrated on was hana (花 - flower) and it was great to see some of the preps demonstrate their growing knowledge by highlighting the two meanings of hana (flower and nose) to Yumi-sensei. Also, a number of students challenged themselves to write more kanji, such as river(川), moon(月), sun(日), mountain(山) and sea(海).
