Playground
Last weekend we had the other section of turf installed in area underneath the trees at the front of the school. This has made such a huge difference to the appearance of the front of our school, but also the way in which students are playing at recess and lunch time. These turfed areas have become a real congregation spot where students are sitting and playing together.
Students have also been playing and exploring with the loose equipment frames. Obstacle courses and various configurations of the planks and stands are great fun to play on, with things being re-arranged regularly to add elements of challenge and adventure. Lots of problem solving and creative thinking is occurring.
Huon FM School News Presenters
Two of our student councillors again visited Huon FM to present our school report.
Heather and Scarlett both spoke extremely well, despite some initial nerves and as with all the students who have presented so far, were excited and interested to see the inside of a real radio studio.
To listen to the Podcast of the interview go to the School News tab at https://huonfm.com/about/podcasts/
Art with Miss Bron
This Term students from the 4/5 class are working with Miss Bron on Wednesday mornings to explore visual art.
They have been investigating the use of negative and positive space to create images, as well as using their names as inspiration for other artworks. Can you see the names Thomas, Chace, Mikayla, Amelie and Katie which have been used to create these ‘creatures’?
ONE WEEK TO GO
We would like to invite parents and grandparents to our morning celebrations on Tuesday 24th August for Book Week. This year’s theme is ‘Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds.’
The staff at Glen Huon decided it would be lots of fun to dress up as Roald Dahl Characters. I wonder if you can pick which characters each staff member is going to be? Have fun creating a character from your child’s favourite book. You may choose any character from a book of your choice or you may like to join the staff with the Roald Dahl theme. We can’t wait to see all the wonderful book characters appearing at school ready for the book parade.
Parade will commence at 9:00am
If you would like to join us please RSVP to the office by Monday 23rd August.
COVID restrictions and QR code still apply and physical distance must be maintained.

Volunteers needed!
We know your time is valuable, but we need more volunteers to help keep the canteen running.
You can do a full day 9-2pm or half a day 9-1130am / 1130-2pm. It’s not hard work, preparing the meals and serving at the counter or supervising older students while they serve. It’s a great way to be involved in the school and get to know students, staff and other parents.
If we don’t get more volunteers the canteen might not be able to run as we have had a number of parents stop helping for various reasons.
You do need your Working With Vulnerable People card (WWVP) and also your food handling certificate, both of which you can obtain online.
Please contact Laura Corbett for more information.
Breakfast Club
The morning rush to leave the house is often the most stressful part of the day for parents of school children. Making sure your kids are up, washed, dressed and have had a decent breakfast can be an uphill struggle, and if you’re trying to get to work yourself, it can be even more stressful.
At Glen Huon Primary School, we have something called Breakfast Club. It runs from 8.30am Monday to Friday and is staffed by volunteers from the Parents and Friends Association. We serve toast and milo to any student that would like something. Some days we have other things such as yoghurt, porridge, pikelets or grilled cheese on toast, depending on what donations we receive.
Our Breakfast Club at Glen Huon is largely funded by the school. We receive some donated bread from Banjos Bakery and also we get some items from Foodbank when we are able to get into the city.
If you would like to get involved, there are a number of things you can do:
- Volunteer to help serve. Send the Parents and Friends Association an email ghpsparentsfriends@outlook.com or call/message Laura on 0437177507
- Donate jams, honey, spreads. We go through 2-3 jars a week and are always looking for more.
- Donate breakfast items such as milk, cereal, flour, bread, eggs, baked beans.
- Sponsor us. If you know a business that would like to sponsor the Breakfast Club, please contact Laura on 0437177507 so we can get the ball rolling.
Thank you for your continued support.
Smiling Mind Space for Our School
Last term Natasha, Iris and Talara from Year 4/5 entered a competition to win a Mindful Space for our school. They wrote a poem about why they would like a mindful space in the school, and their poem won! They won some Dulux paint to paint the area, money to buy things for the space and access to the Smiling Mind learning hub for teachers. We haven’t decided on a spot yet, but it will be a mindfulness space outside.
Here is the poem they wrote…
When your anger takes over, or sorrow, or fear.
The noise of the classroom will soon interfere.
To escape the racket, please Dulux design,
A quiet place for a Smiling Mind.
An awareness space, being right here, right now,
In this moment, Smiling Mind… show us how.
A bubble journey or body scan.
Check in with our feelings, that is the plan.
A healthier place to play, work and learn.
A space to help our Smiling Mind return.
