It is my absolute pleasure to be able to introduce to everyone our 2023 Student Representative Council!
They were all presented with their badges at our Sharing Assembly last Friday and now wear these with honour and pride.
Our School Captains this year are Clancy and Casey
Our Mannena House Captain and Vice House Captain are Marni and Eleanor. Our Tahune House Captain and Vice House Captain are Mikayla and Sam.
Our Secretary is Poppy, our Treasurer is Katie, our Publicity Officer is Lani and our Environmental Officer is Iris.
We held our first meeting yesterday and already plans are underway for an Easter Themed Fun Day on the last day of term…look out for more information soon.
Tomorrow Friday 17 March is our Open Classroom Afternoon.
We invite all our families to come and visit their child/ren’s classroom from 1:50-2:55 and share in the learning which has been taking place so far this term. There will be books to enjoy, games to play, and much, much more.
When you arrive, please pop your name on the sign in sheet which will be at the front of the school so that we have a record of who is on site in case of an emergency, and for health and safety reasons, please only attend if you are well.
As Kinders do not attend on Friday Tania will offer something on a different date.
Children’s University is up and running again this year for students in Years 2-6 and will this year be organised by Mrs Yeates. Mrs Yeates went to visit classes this week to speak with students about joining this great program which aims to encourage children to continue learning, exploring and doing all kinds of interesting things outside of school hours. This of course requires a bit of support from families. Glen Huon Primary School students have always shown a great interest in being a part of this and greatly look forward to the special end of year Graduation Ceremony held on the University of Tasmania Campus.
If your child would like to participate in Children’s University and has not already brought home some information on how to join, please see Mrs Yeates for more information. We are extremely lucky that Bendigo Community Bank is again sponsoring this program in the Huon and so there are no costs involved in joining.
Raffle books will be coming home with the school newsletter today. Please make sure you get them back to the office by Friday 31st March.
Any donations of Easter items can be taken to the office. The more items we get, the more prizes we can have!
Remember, all money raised goes directly to the school for much needed items for your children.
The canteen is open Thursdays at recess and lunch selling snack items. We accept cash only at the canteen.
Next week's special is our new Homemade Sausage Rolls. Please download the Spriggy Schools app to order!
If for any reason you can’t use the app and would like to order your child lunch, please contact Laura on 0437 177 507 to organise an alternative way to place an order.
We have started to move the canteen towards more homemade and nutritious food items. Our weekly special is made in-house and with fresh ingredients. For example, did you know that the spaghetti bolognaise has 7 different vegetables in it? And our Nachos has 8? As well as that we have changed our Cookie recipe to Chia Biscuits which is half the amount of sugar.
As of next term, our sausage rolls will be made in-house by our wonderful volunteers. These too with have 3 different vegetables in them.
In order to do this, we need your support. All funds raised goes back into the school for upgrades that are needed around the school and in classes.
Thank you for your continued support!

Hi everyone,
We were so inspired by the couch in another classroom that we asked around for one of our own. Thank you to Deanne Murtagh for donating one to us.
It is perfect for reading together and working quietly with our wonderful Teacher Aides.

Friday 17th March is World Sleep Day
This year's theme is Sleep is Essential for Health. Sleep is an essential, core pillar of health and is often under-valued and poorly understood. It's as important as diet and exercise.
What happens if I don't get enough sleep?
Lack of sleep makes young people more anxious, able to concentrate less, have more changes in mood, hyperactivity at school and increases challenging behaviours. It also makes you more likely to be sick later in life.
The Sleep Health Foundation has a range of helpful fact sheets including for children with particular sleep problems. (Click on QR code)
How much sleep do you need?
It is well known that as children get older, they need less sleep. Different people have different sleep needs. The advice below is only a guide. You can make a good guess if a person is sleeping enough at night - observe how they act and function during the day.
- 3 – 5-year-olds need 10 – 13 hours a night 6 – 13-year-olds need 09 – 11 hours a night
- 14-17- years old’s need 8-10 hours a night Adults: 7-9 hours
As part of the Tasmania Reads initiative the whole school participated in our own version of Reading Hour.
Last Thursday at 2:30 the whole school gathered in the hall for shared reading and what an absolutely wonderful time it was. Older students buddied up with younger students, teachers read to students and groups of friends read with each other. What a fantastic way to enjoy books and reading together. Thank you to Miss Blair for organising the books for us.
