Dear Families
Welcome back to Term 2. I hope you had a lovely Easter and a restful break over the holidays.
As the weather starts to turn cooler, can I please remind families to make sure children are coming with school jumpers to wear, particularly when outdoors.
Please be aware that notifications of Possible Severe Weather have been announced for late Thursday 5 May and Friday 6 May.
- When? The most severe weather is expected to occur on Friday early morning - daytime hours.
- What’s expected? Significant flash flooding and riverine flooding, severe thunderstorms in parts and may add bursts of more intense rain and gusty winds; damaging south to south easterly winds and damaging surf are also possible mainly about the coasts.
- Finish? The weather is expected to gradually improve later Saturday, and mostly settled weather is expected on Sunday.
To Monitor the situation – use the BoM website/app for updates (TAS warnings).
COVID-19 UPDATE: CLOSE CONTACTS
From Monday 2 May, close contacts of people with COVID-19 no longer need to quarantine for 7 days.
What this means for our students...
Students who are a close contact are able to attend school if they meet the following requirements:
- Are well and not showing any COVID symptoms
- Have returned a negative RAT or PCR test upon realising they were a close contact
- Continue to test daily before leaving the house to attend school during the next 7 days
- Secondary school students must wear a face mask in indoor settings
Current face mask requirements continue with school staff and secondary school students required to wear face masks while indoors on school sites.
There are no requirements for students/parents to notify the school that they are a close contact.
If you develop symptoms at any time whilst a close contact, you must stay home.
Please note, there is no change to the isolation requirements for people who have COVID-19. You must isolate at home for at least 7 days if you test positive for COVID-19.
Read more about the requirements on the coronavirus website: https://www.coronavirus.tas.gov.au/.../advice-for-contacts
Due to the changes to close contact rules, the Department of Education is recommending that all students and staff have a supply of 5 RAT tests at home to allow for testing to occur each school day should the need occur.
Schools continue to be provided with these.
If you need to replenish your stock please contact the school and we will send more home.
Our School Cross Country Carnival is coming up on Thursday 19 May
The Huon and Channel Cross Country Carnival (for qualifying students in years 3-6) is then scheduled for Wednesday 25 May.
A physically distanced spectator area will be set up for our school carnival and of course we are always keen to have a number of helpers on the day to assist with checkpoints and marshalling. Please do NOT come on site if you are at all unwell.
Please ensure your child comes to school on this day with a change of clothes including socks and shoes as this is often quite a muddy event (especially given the rain being forecast for the next few days) and plenty to eat and drink.
Members of our Student Representative Council attended the Huonville ANZAC Day Service during the holidays. They represented our school very proudly on a day when we remembered the sacrifices made by so many in the armed forces.
What's Been Happening In 5/6 This Week?
The 5/6 class has this week been doing some work about ANZAC Day. They have completed these wonderful silhouette artworks.
Students have also been learning about and thinking about what life must have been like for the soldiers in the trenches. Based on this, they have then been writing letters from the perspective of a soldier.

Asthma is a lifelong condition of the airways. In Australia about one in nine people have asthma, one of the highest rates in the world.
At school, every child with asthma should have their own Asthma Action Plan. With your GP, develop or update a written Asthma Action Plan at least every 12 months and ensure your child’s school is given a copy.
Research shows that using an Asthma Action Plan can help:
- Better control asthma
- Reduce the number of asthma attacks
- Reduce the number of days off school
- Reduce reliever medication use
- Reduce hospitalisations
- Improve lung function
For World Asthma Day, Asthma Australia are asking people with asthma to complete a short 5-minute survey about their medication use, to help better understand and address the gaps in care in our community. For more information, visit:

Asthma Australia has lots of asthma resources (see image attached), including Toolkits and information on prevention on treatment.
