UTAS Student Teachers
A very big welcome to two University of Tasmania students who are undertaking their Professional Experience in our school for 4 weeks as they study to become teachers. Jaime is joining 2/3 Munro and Elisa is joining 1/2 Armstrong. We welcome you warmly into our school and hope you enjoy your time here, learning lots as you go. Working with children is such a rewarding thing to do and the impact you will have may reach well beyond anything you can imagine. You have chosen a career that will both inspire and challenge you and we wish you all the very best for your studies and your exciting future careers.
Thank you to everyone who very generously supported our special fundraiser last week for Damien and his family! Our final total after a few more late donations early this week is an enormous $1062.45! This will be given directly to Damien and his family in coming days.
Damien and Ellie, we miss you and think about you often.
Mid-Year Reporting and Communicating With Families
A reminder to families that mid-year reports for students in years 1-6 will be distributed on 7 July 2022
The new look report will show your child’s learning achievement differently. A new 9-point visual scale replaces A-E ratings for students in Years 1 to 10 (and for Prep students at the end of the year).
The 9-point scale will show more specifically where your child’s learning achievement is against the expected standard for their year level.
Below is an example of what the 9-point scale will look like:
There will be no teacher comments on the report. This term parent/teacher conferences will be offered in Week 8 and 9 from from 20th-30th June. Due to COVID-19 considerations, these will take place either be over the phone or via an online meeting. These are a great opportunity to discuss how your child is progressing with their learning. A booking sheet for thse conferences will be coming home in the next few days.
Next Thursday's canteen menu is Chicken Nuggets and don't forget there are also snack items that can be purchased on the day.
We only accept cash over the counter but please order your Chicken Nuggets on the Spriggy Schools app.
A reminder that this coming Monday 13 June is a Public Holiday.
Seedlings will be heading out on an excursion to wayraparattee in Geeveston on Friday 17th June.
A free bus will be leaving Glen Huon Primary school at 9:00am and returning by 12pm.
If you would prefer to drive so you can explore Geeveston afterwards, you are welcome to meet us there around 9:30am!

Parents/Guardians of Prep/One, unfortunately the Growth and Development lesson that was scheduled has now been postponed until Thursday 16th June.

What’s happening in Grade 4/5?
In Science this term we have begun a unit of work titled – Material World. We have been investigating the properties of natural and processed materials. The students have investigated objects found in the classroom and out in the school grounds. We have realised that natural and processed materials have a range of physical properties, and how these properties can influence their use. During the unit we have done lots of questioning and predicting, proposing hypothesis and suggesting possible outcomes and solutions.
One of the investigations titled Gripping Gloves was an interesting activity where we looked at all sorts of gloves. We were able to name up the function of the gloves, the materials used and how the properties of each material used influenced the use of the gloves.
We didn’t realise that there were so many types of gloves. They were made from lots of different materials and were made for a variety of purposes.

Grade 4/5
Winter has officially started! These colder months are a time we’re more likely to catch viral infections (colds, influenza or COVID-19). Did you know children can get between 5 and 10 colds a year, while adults can get 2 to 4 colds each year. This is such an important time to take extra care of ourselves and our families. Keeping our immune systems strong can help prevent catching colds and the flu. So, what can we do to help our immune system? Here are some suggestions:
Exercise: this can be admittedly harder during the winter months but is important to maintain our activity as best as we can! Get outside whenever you can (rug up well if it’s cold!) Be creative with indoor exercise – borrow exercise DVDs from your local library and try something new. Dance-offs are fun – get a little bit silly, get your heart rate up, and prepare to laugh a lot! See if the kids have any new, original ideas for indoor exercise!
Managing stress: Find time to do activities you love and that helps you to relax. Try mindfulness meditations – Smiling Mind is a great app that has lots of meditations/mindfulness ideas to help reduce stress and worries, relax your mind, and improve your resilience.
Sleep: make sure you’re getting enough sleep, as lack of sleep can affect our immune systems.Sticking to a regular sleep routine—even on weekends—maintains the timing of the body's internal clock and can help you fall asleep and wake up more easily.
Keep warm: Wear layers of clothing. (We all know how easy it is to get caught out in Tasmania!) Keep curtains drawn and doors closed to block draughts. Have regular hot drinks and at least one hot meal a day. This is especially important for people with heart or respiratory problems such as asthma.
Hand washing: This is something that is so important to do, and to continue to teach our children to do. Hand washing is one of the BEST and EASIEST ways to avoid becoming sick.
Remember to wash your hands:
- if they’re visibly dirty
- before you eat or prepare food
- after going to the toilet, or changing a nappy
- after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing
- after handling or patting animals
- before and after taking care of someone who is sick
- when you enter and leave a healthcare facility
Keep well and stay warm!
