Thank you to the 22 families who came and visited classrooms as part of our Open Classroom afternoon last week. Children were so proud to be able to invite their families into their classrooms and share their learning with them.
Welcome back Damien
It has been so wonderful to welcome Damien back to school this week. We have missed you Damien!
This is a timely reminder for families to please be vigilant about not sending students to school if they are unwell. This is particularly important in keeping all students and staff safe, particularly given Damine's return to school but also due to the severe relief staff shortages across the state.
Please also make sure you contact the school office on 62666240 to notify us if your child is unwell as our lovely office staff are having to make quite a lot of follow up phone-calls regarding student absences.
Canteen will be closed next week due to the Huon & Channel Swimming Carnival. Laura will be helping at the carnival and we do not have enough volunteers to cover the canteen.
If you want to help out with the canteen next term, your children will get their lunch for free on the days you help out. You will only have one or two Thursdays for the whole term and you can choose to do a full day (10 - 1:30) or a half day (9:30 - 11:30).
Please contact Laura on 0437177507 to volunteer.
We are still calling for donations for the Easter Raffle. If you can, please consider donating a chocolate or two. The more donations we get, the more prizes we can have!
All money raised goes directly to help out school buy things for our children.
State-wide Moderation Day is coming up on Thursday 6 April.
This is a student free day set by the Department.
Teachers from all the Huon Public schools will work together on this day to moderate samples of student work and to undertake professional learning.
Tomorrow in Bush Playgroup we will be roasting pumpkin on the campfire, served with cinnamon and yoghurt, yum! We'll be weaving with natural materials and exploring the beautiful bush play area.
Next Wednesday 29th March Seedling families are invited to attend the Day of Delight in Geeveston - there will be no regular Playgroup session next Wednesday. The Day of Delight is a celebration of play in childhood. There will be free activities run by all the Huon Valley LiL groups, a sausage sizzle and lots of fun things to see and do! It runs from 10-12:30 in the Geeveston Heritage Park.
We hope to see you there!

On Wednesday 5th of April the Student Representative Council (SRC) have organised a Free Easter Fun Day for all students to enjoy.
This will include:
Easter Themed Free Dress
Recess and Lunch activities and games.
Congratulations to all our Year 3 and 5 students who completed NAPLAN testing over the past 2 weeks.
At Glen Huon Primary we have a tradition of celebrating the completing of the testing with pizza. As always, this was much enjoyed!
Being part of a small community school means that the community is often needed to help at the school. We are always looking for volunteers to help with the canteen, covering books, reading to children, helping at school carnivals or helping out with other things around the school. This is also open to grandparents, aunts and uncles, carers and friends. All you need is your working with Vulnerable People Card, which can be applied for online and photos taken at Service Tas.
If you can spare some time, it makes a huge difference to the school. If you wish to get involved, please join our Facebook group to stay in the loop of upcoming events, contact the school office or message Laura Corbett on 0437177507
Public Health Service has advised of gastroenteritis (gastro) outbreaks in the Tasmanian community, including in schools
Infectious gastroenteritis (‘gastro’) is a short-term illness caused by infection and inflammation of the digestive system. Symptoms may include diarrhoea (frequent or loose stools), vomiting and abdominal pain. There are many causes of gastroenteritis, with the most common being a viral infection.
Infectious gastroenteritis is spread very easily. It may be spread via vomit and faeces (poo) of an infected person or contaminated objects, food or water.
Infection control recommendations:
- Children or staff who become unwell with vomiting and/or diarrhoea while at school should go home.
- Children and staff should not return to school until at least 48 hours after symptoms have resolved.
- Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water after any contact with a sick person.
- Staff to remind children to wash their hands before eating and after using the toilet.
Additional information can be found at https://www.health.tas.gov.au/publications/viral-gastro-fact-sheet.
This year in 1/2 we’ve started off with a strong, systematic approach to phonics.
So far we’ve learnt about the letters and sounds that s,a,t,p,i,n,m,d,g,o,c and k represent.
Each time we learn about a new letter and sound we unlock it on our sound wall. Then we add a photo to remind us what happens with our mouth when we make the sound and add a few words that have the sound in them – the students are choosing the words which is making for a VERY interesting wall.
Learning about letters and sounds is laying the foundations for some of us to learn how to read and for some of us to improve our reading skills. It’s also helping us to develop our spelling knowledge which will help us with our writing.
