Dollars for Damien
Damien from our Grade 1/2 class has this week been in Melbourne in the Royal Children’s Hospital having tests on a growth in his back. Yesterday doctors confirmed that this growth is cancer.
Damien’s family is with him in Melbourne and we are very much thinking of them and wishing them all the very best.
Of course we want to be able to do as much as we can to support Damien and his family.
On Friday June 3rd we will be having a Free Dress Day Fundraiser to help raise money to support Damien and his family.
Any donations big or small will be gratefully welcomed and all funds raised will be given directly to Damien’s family.
A GoFundMe account has also been created by his Aunty which people may wish to contribute to.
If you or your family require any support, please contact the school.
We ask that families continue to be extremely vigilant around not sending students to school if they are at all unwell.
We currently have a few COVID positive cases who are isolating away from school and letters have been sent home to classes affected.
We also have a confirmed case of influenza connected to the school and so it is important that we are being vigilant, not just because of COVID, but also the flu.
RAT tests continue to be readily available from the school office and of course people who are close contacts are required to take a RAT test every day before leaving home for 7 days.
Thank you for your ongoing support.
What an absolute delight it was to see everyone participating so well in our Cross Country Carnival last Thursday. The weather was kind to us and the whole atmosphere was just lovely as people cheered and encouraged everyone to have a go and do their best. What really struck me was how everyone was looking for ways to be helpful and to support our younger students.
I would especially like to recognise one of our Grade 6 students, Leino, who stopped to support one of his classmates whilst running.
The comment he made was, “I’d rather help a friend than have a ribbon.”
This shows such great compassion, empathy, maturity and comradery….and he still managed to win a ribbon! Congratulations Leino.
Grade 3-6 students who gained a place at our school Cross Country Carnival last Thursday yesterday attended the Huon-Channel Cross Country Carnival.
Despite the cold, they were absolute champions! Thank you to Mrs Tucker, Mrs Carson and Mrs Lovell who braved the cold with our team.
One of our Teacher Aides is associated with the Tassiemums organisation.
If you have any coats to donate, please bring them to school and she will arrange for them to be delivered to a drop-off point.
Please ensure all coats are freshly washed and in excellent condition.
In 1/2 we have started a new spelling program in the afternoons to help us learn to spell 200 of the most frequently used words. We have personalised spelling lists made up of the words we still need to learn. Each day we practice writing our words in lots of different ways - with chalk on the ground, watercolour paint, playdough, pipe cleaners, writing with the wrong hand and colour coding the consonants and vowels.
This spelling program goes hand in hand with our spelling inquiry - at the moment we're focussing on the digraphs ch, sh, th, ph and wh.
We are going to be spelling experts by the end of this year!

Chaplaincy Week: 22-29 May 2022
Chaplaincy Week is an opportunity to celebrate the work of chaplains, working in schools across the state and making a positive difference in each of those communities. Glen Huon Primary is lucky to have a chaplain visit us every Tuesday.
A Day in the Life of your School Chaplain.
My day starts at 7.30 am as I load the car with food collected from the Foodbank.
I arrive at school to make breakfast for anyone who wants breakfast, this includes toast, warm milo and sometimes fruit and yoghurt, depending on what’s available from the Foodbank.
As soon as that is cleared up I go down to the office where we have set up a Pieklets and Chat club from 9 to 10 with students that would like to chat with me about issues that they may have. These chats vary from friendship challenges to small things that may be bothering them. For the rest of the day I spend time in classrooms. Sometimes I work with a small group and sometimes I work with one child supporting their learning. At recess I help organise Children's University. My lunch break involves sitting outside with students whilst they eat lunch and we sometimes play board games. I am present where students are able to ask me questions, or seek support if needed. Just before I leave for the day I check in with the school wellbeing team (Mrs Lees, Ms Webb and myself) to talk about any students I may think need additional support. This is just another safeguard to make sure that your young people feel supported and heard. It's definitely a team effort.
My job is a wonderful mix of care, conversations and supporting children with issues that arise. I am another safe adult in your children’s lives that they can choose to talk to and be supported by.
I am also available for conversations with parents, carers and staff who may need some additional support. It is an honour and a privilege that I am part of this school and community. If you would like to get in touch, please contact me via email. Michelle.lovell@education.tas.gov.au
