We have a few exciting things coming up next week.
On Monday 31st October we have some people from St Johns Ambulance coming to run Basic First Aid lessons with each class in the school.
On Wednesday 2nd November at 1:30pm we have a special performance called Bully No More. This will explore in a fun and interactive way what bullying is, how it makes you feel and offers strategies to deal with the problem.
As Wednesday is not a usual Kindergarten day, we are inviting any Kindergarten students to attend at 1:30pm.
Our next School Association Meeting is coming up at 6:00pm on Wednesday 2nd November.
Anyone is welcome to attend this meeting.
Swimming and Water Safety Program 2022
Our 10 day Swimming and Water Safety Program will be running from 14th - 25th November at Huonville Swimming Pool.

Grade 5 and any Grade 6 students participating will swim from 1:15pm - 2:15pm
We are also providing a 5 day Water Orientation Program for all Grade 1 and Grade 2 students.

For both programs, students will be transported by bus to and from the pool.
Students will be required to wear swimming caps. These will be provided by the school.
Parent letters and Aquatic Consent forms will be coming home today.
More information and reminders will also be sent home closer to the dates.
Our Student Wellbeing Survey Results for 2022 have come back and reflect a really positive culture here at Glen Huon Primary School.
Some highlights are the really positive responses to statements like “I feel like I belong in this school” and “I feel like I am important to this school” as well as a big increase in feelings of happiness.
On the Student Free Day (October 21st) teachers and teacher assistants came together to do some work around Phonics. It doesn’t often happen that we are able to meet as a school team, so this was a wonderful opportunity!
Mrs Lees worked through the Department’s policy on teaching phonics in our schools with the intention of deepening our understanding of what is meant by phonics teaching and how this connects to our School Improvement Plan goals of improving student outcomes.
Then I, (Mrs Steenholdt) took the team through the Phonics Scope and Sequence (K-2) document and gave everyone the opportunity to reflect on our current practices, identify gaps and then to individually identify one area they would like to ‘bump up’ in their own practice from these gaps in the coming weeks. Early Years teaching staff will reflect together on progress with their goal in a Professional Learning Team meeting in early November, then set a new goal. Likewise, teacher assistants will reflect together in mid-November at their PLT meeting and new goals will be set.
It was so valuable to have the opportunity to have these professional discussions because we had time to question, discuss and clarify our thinking as a team. The biggest takeaway for me was the passion that was evident in the room. Passion to learn, improve our practice and do the very best for the students of Glen Huon Primary.
Thank you so much to parents and carers who may have had to make alternative arrangements for their children on the Student Free Day, we recognise that this is sometimes difficult and appreciate your support.

Quality Teaching Coach, Literacy (Early Years)
On Wednesday this week the Prep class was lucky to have Bron come along and teach us about bush foods as part of some work she is doing with each class. It was just so wonderful to see the children so engaged and involved and best of all, keen to try bush foods! Bron taught us all about where Tasmanian bush foods can be sourced, how to prepare them and how to use them in other recipes. Best of all, she had made us some amazing damper, dip and crackers using bush foods that we all were able to try! The flavours of the different foods and drinks were amazing and I will confess to spending my recess break ordering milled kunzea, milled wattleseed and Tassie bush dukkah to use at home for my family!
Thanks so much Bron, for this wonderful opportunity and these incredibly tasty recipe ideas.
Prep/One are always interested in having the opportunity to paint and we have done a lot of work this year on painting from our observations. This week Mrs Steenholdt invited them to paint a closed artichoke flower. This caused a lot of discussion as children offered their ideas about what this was. Mya was able to share with everyone that she knew it was an artichoke and that she has them in her garden, thanks Mya!
The class did their first painting, we shared these and discussed what we noticed about one another’s paintings. As we discussed these noticings children respectfully offered one another ideas on how they could improve their paintings. Have a look at our results! I am so impressed with the respectful way the children spoke to one another, how carefully they listened and the improvements in their work.
The canteen is open Thursdays at recess and lunch selling snack items. We accept cash only at the canteen.
Next week's special will be a hot favorite amongst students and staff, Nachos.

Breakfast Club with Huon Me Crumpet Co
We have been lucky enough to have the small business Huon Me Crumpet Co. offer to supply their delicious crumpets for Breakfast Club on Monday! They have also kindly donated Tasmanian Honey and butter and they have a dairy free option as well. From 8.30am they will be serving their crumpets from the canteen. Come along and try them!
A little information about the business:
Born in a 140 year old cottage deep in The Huon Valley during the slow days of the 2020 COVID lockdown.
As COVID 19 squeezed us all into isolation, Cam set about perfecting the crumpet – a notoriously fickle product to make.
At the same time, Ally did what everyone else was doing – she created a sourdough starter!
The marriage of these two tasks produced a beautiful baby – the Huon Me Crumpet Co.
These crumpets are fluffy and light in the middle, with a lovely crunch on the outside, perfect for you to use as a base for your culinary creations.
