Wishing everyone a very happy and safe holiday.
Mrs Bender’s Retirement
On the 17th October 1973 a very special lady first started working in our school. That lady was Mrs Bender.
This week marks her final full week of service before she retires on 17th October this year. The retirement date was specially selected by Mrs Bender, as it signifies 50 years of continuous service, not only within the Department, but at Glen Huon Primary School.
It goes without saying that this is a truly remarkable accomplishment!
Generations of students and families have been welcomed into our school by Mrs Bender. Her care and compassion are second to none, and the little things she does help connect with the children, staff and families in our school to make them feel safe and included are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the wonderful presence and impact she has at Glen Huon Primary school.
In her humble and gracious style, Mrs Bender has requested that there be no big event to farewell her. However she will be spending time visiting each class on her last day, catching up with everyone and sharing many fond memories and stories.
I know that many of you will have farewell messages for Mrs Bender and will pop into the office in the coming days to wish her well.
This year we are recognising home reading using a bunting display in the hall. At our most recent assembly many of the year Prep, 1 and 2 student proudly added the bunting flags to the display.
We are continuing to implement the Department’s Phonics Scope and Sequence for years Kinder-2 and our Staff Professional Learning Teams have been working hard to look at our PAT reading data and undertake specific and deliberate teaching strategies to support our students right across the school with their reading comprehension.
PAT testing will again be coming up early in Term 4, supporting us to track student growth and identify further areas for focussed teaching and learning.
Our Athletics Carnival went ahead last Thursday despite the threat of possible showers, and what a fantastic day it was!
Encouragement, helpfulness, courage and determination were all being displayed in ample quantities and the day was a huge success.
Thank you to the many people who helped to make our day the success that it was including:
- Mr West and sensei Sam for their wonderful organisation of the carnival and events.
- Our wonderful House Captains, Mikayla and Marni.
- The Rosny College Japanese students who helped with running of the novelty events.
- Our Parents and Friends for the delicious BBQ.
- Michelle and Foodbank for the donation of muesli bars and strawberries.
- Our staff who all helped with marshalling, organising children ready for events and supervision.
- Parents who came along to help and cheer on the day.
Some quotes on the day from the 4/5 class were
“I tried my hardest and I tied fourth…I’m proud that I didn’t give up” Hannah
“I am most proud of when people were cheering people when they were running….It was great because people had a go and kept going.” Alannah
“I really liked the Japanese events because it was fun doing a different country’s events” Isabelle
“I loved when people were cheering for us. It felt really nice when I heard it.” Quilla
On Tuesday Illawarra and Kingston Primary Schools came to our school for a robotics meet. We were split into mixed school groups and it was a great chance to make new friends, we made robots and battled other teams in the sumo ring.
Our Chaplian Michelle kindly cooked us some scones, pies and sausage rolls to munch on (thanks Michelle).
We all had a great time and we hope it will happen again in the future.
