What a wonderful start to the school year. Thank you all for making me feel very welcome back to Glen Huon Primary. I have already had the pleasure of meeting many of you as you have done the morning drop off or afternoon pick up. I am looking forward to working with the children, staff, families and the Glen Huon Community.
I would like to thank the school staff for all their work to get ready for the school year with setting up rooms, working in the grounds, administration tasks as well as planning for learning.
The staff spent the first 3 days of the school year working together to participate in Professional Learning to ensure as a school we are up to date with all department requirements. A reminder to volunteers wanting to come and help around the school you need to ensure that you have a current Working with Vulnerable Peoples card as well as completing the compulsory training which is designed to help us better safeguard kids in Tasmania.
Throughout the training, you’ll learn what to do if you believe a child or young person is being harmed. You will also learn what your reporting requirements are.
For more information on our Safeguarding Training, visit: https://www.decyp.tas.gov.au/.../safeguarding-training/
To help you get to know me a little better I have included a little bit about myself.
I moved to Tasmania almost 21 years ago with my husband and 2 children and have called Franklin home for the past 12 years. I started teaching about 16 years ago and spent much of this time here at Glen Huon teaching the Kinder. The past 6 years I have been working for the department to support staff around inclusive education with a focus on supporting students with disability in our schools.
Over the weekend I became the National 5 stand shotgun B grade gold medallist and have the opportunity to travel to New Zealand later in the year to represent Australia. So, all round it has been a lovely start to the year.
I look forward to getting to know you all over the coming months and thank you once again for welcoming me back to your lovely school.
Car Park
A reminder that we need to keep the bus park free in both the morning and afternoon. We understand the carpark is extremely full at the moment as we all settle into the school year but we need to ensure the bus is able to move in and out of the carpark freely.

The 2024 National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) will occur in Term 1, from Wednesday 13 March to Monday 25 March 2024 for Years 3 and 5 children.

Parents and Friends Information
Being part of a small community school means that the community is often needed to help at the school. We are always looking for volunteers to help with the Breakfast Club, canteen, covering books, reading to kids, helping at school carnivals or helping out with other things around the school. This is also open to grandparents, aunts and uncles, carers and friends. All you need is your working with vulnerable people card, to complete a short video about safeguarding our kids (14 minutes)
If you can spare some time, it makes a huge difference to the school. If you wish to get involved, please join our Facebook group to stay in the loop of upcoming events, contact the school office or message Laura Corbett on 0437177507
Validation forms, Information Communication Technologies (ICT), Major Excursion Consent and Aquatic Water Based Activities form's will be sent out with each student by the end of this week.
It's really important that these 4 forms are handed in for processing so we have up-to-date information completed before the Swimming Carnival, on the 29th of February.

2024 levy letters have been generated. These will by posted out will the Department's Finance unit and families should expect to receive these across the next couple of weeks. Thank you for your support.
At Glen Huon Primary School, our canteen is run fully by volunteers. We rely on parents, grandparents and caregivers to run and staff the canteen.
We would love for you to get involved. We run a roster where you generally only have to do 2 maybe 3 days a term and to say thank you, we give your children their lunch for free.
You can do a full day 10 – 1:30 pm or half a day 9 – 11:30 am.
The day involves preparing the meals, cleaning up, sorting orders and serving at the counter. It’s a great way to be involved in the school and get to know students, staff and other parents.
You do need your working with vulnerable people card (WWVP) and also your food handling certificate, and complete the safeguarding video, all of which you can obtain online.
Please contact Laura Corbett on 0437177507 for more information or join the Glen Huon Primary P&F Facebook group.
The canteen is open Thursdays at recess and lunch selling snack items. We accept cash only at the canteen.
Please make sure you get your order in by 10am Wednesday to save missing out.
Thank you for your continued support.
In the holidays, Liz, Emma C and Tiffany were invited to attend Orton-Gillingham (OG) training in Launceston. Kristy attended the training as a ‘refresher’ as she has previously undertaken training in OG methods. The OG approach is an explicit, multisensory, structured, sequential and diagnostic way to teach literacy. These methods will be implemented in P-3 classrooms to support our work in implementing quality teaching methods in reading as identified by the DECYP Strategic Plan. We thank Liz, Emma, Tiffany and Kristy for giving up some of their holidays to attend this valuable 5 days of training.
The drama group will be back for 2024 from Grade 2 - 6. Starting on the 6th of March.
If your child is interested please get in contact with Katherine Dewhurst on 0437 958 797, via text and more information will be sent home with your child.
Thank you
Katherine

There seems to be a large quantity of mosquitoes in the bush play area and appears that some children are getting stung.
We have some mosquito spray at the school, which were happy to spray on your child. If you'd like us to do this, please call us at the school, or email glen.huon.primary@decyp.tas.gov.au
The following is a photo of the mosquito spray, if you'd like to check it's suitable:
The following is information about a mosquito band used for mosquito deterrence.
