We have had another lovely week here at school with lots of learning happening in classrooms as children and teachers get into the new routines of the classrooms and school year. Today we had our first canteen day with an added bonus of icy poles to help quench the thirst during the extremely hot weather. Thank you to our canteen team for their support. Children have also been enjoying having a piece of toast and a drink of milo from breakfast club each morning. Thank you all or our breakfast club volunteers.
Yesterday, we had an all school get together for some whole school messages. We spoke to the children about the importance of bringing and wearing a broad brimmed hat when outside at recess and lunch. If they do not have an appropriate hat for play time they will now be required to only play on the shaded synthetic grassed area. Please help your child to remember their hat, ensuring their name is visible within the hat so if it is misplaced it can be returned in a timely manner.
Some other reminders that we gave were,
- Keeping our grounds and playground clean by putting rubbish in the bin.
- If using sticks, they are to be only used in the bush for building cubbies.
- If they are adventurous and are climbing trees to climb higher than I am tall.
Signing your child out early.
Please remember that if you need to collect your child early from school, please pop into the office and sign them out before leaving the school ground.
Return of Validation and permission forms
On Monday you will have received an envelope with your child’s validation and permission forms. Please take the time to complete these and return them to school as soon as possible. We require them returned before next week's swim carnival for our Prep-Grade 6 students.

Grade 5/6 are trying their hand at becoming agricultural scientists in Term One. Here we have designed out pollinator pals to come with us on our learning journey. These pals have been designed with the following questions in mind:
Can it land on a flower?
How does it see and hide from predators?
How does it taste nectar?
Can it move easily from flower to flower?
We will be building our knowledge of biomimicry to see how modern inventions have been designed to mimic nature. For example, did you know Velcro was developed after observation of the hooks on the outside of certain plant seeds that allow them to grip onto animal’s coats for dispersal. There are lots more interesting things we will be discovering in our unit this term so stay tuned.
On Thursday February 29, students from Prep-Grade 6 will be participating in the school swimming carnival at the Huonville Swimming Pool.
Upper primary students will have the opportunity to earn house points for each event they enter, and we encourage all students to enter as many events as they feel comfortable competing in, while Early Childhood student’s complete activities in the shallow pool.
Students will be travelling by bus from Glen Huon Primary School to the Huonville Swimming Pool with the first race beginning at 10:00am. The carnival will be completed by approximately 2:00pm to allow for students to return to school in time for buses. It is essential that student validation forms are returned to the school office prior to the carnival to ensure your child is allowed to swim at the carnival.
Parents are welcome to attend as spectators, however we are seeking volunteers to help make the day run smoothly. Some jobs which we require assist with are scorers, place judges and marshals. All volunteers must have a current WWVP card.
If you are intending to attend the carnival and are happy to help out on the day and be assigned a specific job please let me know via email declan.west@decyp.tas.gov.au or by contacting the school office.
Please see the following attachment with the time-table.

Children's University
Children’s University is a global program that encourages children aged 7–14 to participate in extracurricular learning. In Tasmania, the program is administered by The Peter Underwood Centre at the University of Tasmania, and delivered in partnership with local schools and community centres.
Passport to Learning
New members receive a passport. They record their learning hours and collect stamps in it. When they reach milestone hours, their achievements are celebrated at a special graduation ceremony. The first milestone for new members is 30 hours. But members can continue to strive for higher awards. The hours also accrue, so if a milestone is not reached in the school year, the hours can count towards next year.
The Learning
Children’s University is voluntary and child led. Members are encouraged to explore and discover new ideas and experiences.
Activities may include:
- after school and lunch time clubs/activities
- visits to learning destinations, e.g. museums, libraries, nature parks
- school holiday programs
- Portal activities (online)
The School co-ordination at Glen Huon is Kristy Woolley. She is support by Michelle Lovell on Tuesdays. Please contact Kristy if your child/ren would like to join, either in person or via email, kristy.woolley@decyp.tas.gov.au
We are looking forward to many students joining CU this year!
